Un-‘Boring’ Your Brand Voice: How to Keep Customers Engaged

November 08, 20242 min read

"People connect with personalities, not perfection—and they trust reliability." - Sarah George

Does your brand voice and marketing message lack excitement? Let’s turn that around! A lively, engaging brand voice isn’t just about fancy words—it’s about personality, connection, and sounding like a real human rather than a corporate bot.

What exactly is brand voice? It's your company's personality—how it shows up in the marketplace. It’s the unique tone, style, and personality you present to reflect your brand's values, identity, and core beliefs. For instance, a playful, informal brand voice (like Progressive Insurance) might use casual language, humor, and conversational tones, while a more serious or formal brand voice (like Allstate Insurance) would use polished language and a professional tone. This consistency builds trust and recognition, helping customers identify with and connect emotionally to the brand.

So, what goes into creating a brand voice that actually gets people to listen? Here are 3 easy steps your team can take to add some personality for better engagement:

Step 1: Know Who You’re Talking To

Every great conversation starts with knowing your audience. Begin by building a picture of who your customers are. Is it punchy, bold language that’ll resonate, or something more empathetic and thoughtful?

Bonus tip: Use AI to help you!

  1. Gather customer reviews, social comments, or testimonials from your audience. Ask a generative AI like ChatGPT, Claude, or Jasper, “Analyze this language and tell me the top 3 words or phrases our clients use to describe us.”

  2. Once AI picks out popular phrases, ask it to “Generate 10 additional words and phrases that match this style and vibe.”

  3. Incorporate this language into your copy, social posts, campaign names, website pages—anywhere your brand speaks.

Step 2: Think Beyond Words

Brand voice isn’t just about what you say but the feeling you convey. Every message, post, or email should feel like it’s coming from the same place, building trust and a memorable brand personality. For images, use photos of smiling, happy people engaged in your services or using your products—they’re the most effective. Also, consistently use your brand fonts and colors from your brand design guide. Don’t have a brand guide? I can help.

Step 3: Keep It Fun and Real

Want people to stick around? Make sure your brand voice feels relatable and accessible. Above all, remain consistent. Remember, people connect with personalities, not perfection—and they trust reliability.

A compelling brand voice doesn’t happen overnight, but the payoff is huge. Engage with your customers, make them feel heard, and don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through! Need help getting your brand voice consistent? Schedule a Marketing 360 VIP intensive now.
