"Getting your marketing from scattered ideas to a strategic, prioritized plan is the foundation for growth." - Sarah George
Ever feel like your marketing to-do list is a bit of a mixed-up mess? You know there are tasks to tackle, ideas to test, and goals to hit, but they're all jumbled in your head like a jigsaw puzzle without the edges. You're not alone! Getting your marketing from scattered ideas to a strategic, prioritized plan is the foundation for growth. Let's break down exactly how to make this happen so your ideas can move from chaos to clarity.
The first step to clarity? Write it all down. Grab a notepad - or, if you're the digital type, a notes app - and pour out every marketing idea, task, and "should-do" you can think of. This isn't about organization—yet. The goal is simply to get everything out of your head and onto a page. This is a mental inventory: any content ideas, ad campaigns, newsletter concepts, website tweaks, or market research projects. If it's in your brain, it belongs on the page.
Why it matters: Brain dumping clears mental clutter and lets you see everything in one place. It also gives you the freedom to stop juggling ideas so you can think more clearly about what comes next. Plus, seeing it all laid out can be a surprising relief!
Now that you have a list, you can turn that jumble into a focused plan. Review your list and rank each item by importance. What will directly impact your business goals? What's low-priority, and what might just be a fun idea to save for later? This step is all about discerning what will move your marketing forward and what can be parked in the "someday" category.
Here are three ways to filter your priorities:
Impact: Will this task bring more traffic, clients, or brand awareness?
Timing: Are there time-sensitive items like seasonal campaigns or product launches?
Alignment: Does this action align with your brand's long-term goals?
Prioritizing ensures you spend your limited time and resources where it matters most.
Big marketing goals can feel overwhelming, but breaking them into smaller tasks can keep you motivated. Take one major goal, like a website revamp, and list the smaller actions needed to get it done—choosing a design, writing new copy, or updating product pages. These bite-sized steps will be easier to tackle, making your progress tangible. Plus, if you're like me, seeing those checkmarks next to a smaller task will motivate you to keep moving forward.
This is where your scattered ideas turn into achievable actions. Set deadlines for these smaller tasks and reward yourself as you check them off. This gradual approach keeps your momentum going without feeling buried under your to-do list. I like using the Click Up app to keep me in line because you can have tasks with subtasks.
Finally, every time you reach a small win or complete a big task, celebrate it. It's easy to jump straight into the next project, but taking a moment to recognize your hard work can keep your energy and enthusiasm high. Marketing success is often a marathon, not a sprint—so give yourself credit along the way. Maybe it's your favorite latte or a day to sleep in, go enjoy!
With your list organized, prioritized, and broken down, your marketing is finally strategic and manageable. No more scatterbrained ideas and half-finished projects. You're now focused, effective, and ready to watch your marketing efforts bring in results. Need help tackling the bigger picture? Let's chat about turning your to-do list into a strategic roadmap! What does it mean to connect to your clients? One definition of connecting is to join together to provide access and communication. You have to hear them. Then you can speak to them, and they will be more likely to hear you. Knowing who you are marketing to and what matters to them is critical.
How do you do that? It starts with research and understanding.
