"People take action when the path forward is clear and beneficial to them."- Sarah George
Why Clear Calls to Action Are the Secret to Marketing Success
Humans are wired to conserve energy—it’s a survival instinct. That means if we don’t have to do something, we usually won’t. But when someone directly asks us to act, it triggers accountability. We take action because it benefits us, too—just like loading the dishwasher because it ensures future meals (and peace in the household!).
The same principle applies to your clients. They won’t act unless you ask them. Many businesses assume their audience knows what to do next, but that’s rarely the case. A clear, actionable Call to Action (CTA) is the bridge between potential clients and actual conversions.
A Call to Action (CTA) is a concise, directive phrase that tells your audience exactly what step to take next. In the StoryBrand framework, a CTA is one of the seven critical components of effective marketing messaging.
There are two types of CTAs:
Direct CTA: The ultimate action you want them to take—like "Buy Now," "Schedule a Call," or "Request a Quote."
Transitional CTA: Smaller, commitment-building steps that lead to the direct action, such as "Follow Us on Instagram," "Download Our Free Guide," or "Watch the Demo."
Think of transitional CTAs as a first date and a direct CTA as the proposal. Both are necessary, but in the right order.
Without a clear call to action, your audience doesn’t know how to engage with you—even if they want to. Being explicit about the action you want them to take eliminates guesswork and builds trust. Too many vague or conflicting CTAs, however, can confuse potential clients and cause them to disengage altogether.
Your CTAs should be assertive but not pushy. Instead of passive phrases like "Learn More," use stronger, action-oriented language such as "Join Today" or "Get Started Now." Confidence signals to your audience that your service is worth their time and money.
Take this real-world example: I worked with a custom manufacturing client whose website was packed with great information and photos, but it lacked a clear action for prospects to take. We added a "Request a Quote" button to the header and service pages. Within one week, the client received multiple quote requests—proof that people will act when you guide them.
Marketing strategy and marketing plan are like peanut butter and jelly—great on their own, but unbeatable together. The strategy sets your vision, while the plan gets you there with clear, actionable steps. When you have both working in harmony, you can expect to see real, measurable results. CTAs belong anywhere you communicate with your audience:
Website: Add prominent CTAs to your homepage, service pages, and blog posts.
Emails: Close with a clear next step, like "Schedule a Call" or "Claim Your Free Guide."
Social Media Captions: Direct readers to “Click the Link in Bio” or “Comment Below.”
Print Materials: Include CTAs on business cards, flyers, and brochures.
