A Marketing Plan that Fits Your Life

Most small businesses spend 8-10 hours a week marketing. This "marketing tax" doesn't have to take 25% of your working hours! You can have an "easy" plan that fits in with the way you want to run your business AND your life.

Start Simple, Then Add More

Ever heard of the EZ+1 technique? I first heard it for writing, but it works for almost anything. Start with one thing. Maybe that's emailing your contacts once a month. Map out a single goal to go along with it. Once you're seeing traction on that goal or you've achieved that goal, add a new goal to send an email twice a month.

Once you've achieved a few goals in that group, start a new marketing activity. Maybe that's a networking group. Now you have a new goal for your newsletter: create a system to generate the bi-monthly content. And you have a goal for your networking group: gain newsletter subscribers – EZ!

When Something Feels Hard, Don't Avoid It

Easy to implement doesn't mean it won't feel hard; it means that it's simple to accomplish. After all, the best things in life are simple but can also be hard.

Ask yourself, and be honest. Why is this feeling so hard? Is it because you don't want to market at all? Is it because it's new and you haven't developed that pattern yet? Break down the hard into multiple steps. If you can, have another team member or colleague look for any holes that may be making it harder than necessary.

One client I helped get started with a launch plan avoided email marketing like the plague. Once she had a template that made designing comfortable, she created her emails and felt so excited when she sent them. On top of that, she was thrilled when her list engaged back.

Conclusion: When we break down the weekly or monthly marketing activities into small pieces, they're so much easier to implement. AND adding only one thing at a time helps us build that marketing muscle slowly so we don't end up with growth pains. "Less is more" applies here, just like the throw pillows on your couch.
